Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, involves using implants to make breasts larger or replace volume lost because of weightloss or pregnancy.

Incisions can be made in several places. Incisions can be made under the breast, in the armpit, or around the areola. The incision depends on the type of implant and your surgeon's preference.

Implants are usually silicone or saline. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. If a saline implant leaks, the body absorbs the saline and expells it. Silicone implants are filled with a gel. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant or leak into the breast area. The body will not absorb and expell the silicone gel. The implant is placed either over or under the pectoral muscle, depending on individual circumstances.
